The Tower of David

The Tower of David, an ancient citadel located near the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem, is one of the most fascinating sites in the Old City of Jerusalem. In fact, this citadel contains important archeological finds dating back around 3,000 years. This Tower was thought at first to be part of Biblical Jerusalem, mistakenly. The citadel actually was constructed at least several hundred years after the Biblical date of King David's reign.

This tower was built to strengthen a strategically weak point in the Old City's defenses. The citadel was constructed during the second century BCE and repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt by many civilizations. This is what makes it so intriguing, from Canaanites and Israelites all the way down to the Ottomans, all building throughout each other's works, is extensive remains left behind them.

With the unification of Jerusalem in 1967 after the Six Day War, the citadel's military role ceased to be needed and its cultural role was revived. Today, the tower has become a popular scene for benefit events, craft shows, concerts, and various performances. There is also a Tower of David Museum.
