Aleh is a rehabilitative network of centers caring for the most severely disabled children in Israel.
Established in 1982, Aleh believes that every child, regardless of the severity of the physical or cognitive disability, has the right to benefit from the best available care and develop to his or her full potential. Its four facilities located in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Gedera and the Negev; provide 650 children and young adults with all the specialized services they need to live a quality life: residential living, medical care, rehabilitative and therapeutic treatment, special education, vocational training opportunities, plus social and cultural activities.
As Israel’s largest organization for the severely disabled, Aleh’s groundbreaking rehabilitative concepts are changing social perceptions regarding the care for the most vulnerable amongst us.
Aleh’s Volunteers – Making a Real Difference
Volunteers from all walks of life, from all over the world work with Aleh’s residents on a regular basis. These include teenagers who take the children out for walks and on trips, national service girls who supplement the professional staff and help run social activities, men who help bathe the older boys, and women who help feed the children. Musicians and entertainers come armed with instruments to engage the children; students help out in the classrooms; youths – individually and in groups - pop in on weekends to bring their own brand of cheer and good humor; and visiting groups of professionals include Aleh in their itinerary, making volunteering with these special children an integral part of their visit to Israel.
In the words of one volunteer: This is what I came away with: it is hard to say that these special people are just like the rest of us. Their lives are much more difficult, they deal with many more physical obstacles. Yet despite that, they have taught me so many things: to appreciate all I have, the meaning of true acceptance and, most importantly – how to offer unconditional love. I feel that have become a truly integral part of the Aleh family.
