Ancient History: Excavations have found copper workings and mining operations that defined and influenced the region during various times in history. Timna Valley near Eilat has vast resources of copper and other minerals. Bibically, Eilat is mentioned and referenced a number of times, that includes after the Exodus from Egypt and during the reign of King David. During the Roman period Eilat was along the trading route.
Archaeological sites in the Eilat region indicate scattered agricultural settlements, with intensive copper mining activity in Timna, north of Eilat.
